Self Defense Training

Strength in Every Move: Self-Defense Workshops

Self Defense or “Hosin-Sul” applies core Taekwondo techniques to defend oneself from real-world attacks. Self Defense techniques include sequences of blocks, strikes, throws and joint manipulations for efficient neutralization of threats.

Self Defense in Taekwondo centers around two principles—linear or hard techniques that meet force with force, and circular (soft) techniques that redirect the energy for efficient control and takedowns. These principles are often showcased as demonstrations in tournaments that our students take part in, but they are very useful to incapacitate aggressors quickly and can include defenses even against the weapons.

Core Concepts of Self Defense in Taekwondo

In Taekwondo, the Self Defense is categorized into Linear and Circular Techniques. Linear techniques such as punches, head-butts, and direct kicks that intercepts incoming strikes head-on. Whereas, Circular Technique emphasizes on redirection of the attack, using off-center blocks and sweeps to unbalance an opponent before applying various locks, throws, and takedowns.

Grappling Self Defense is a technique that covers escapes from grabs and holds, and leverages joint manipulations to break free or transition into throw in controllable fashion. Students will also learn the ability to fall, land or roll safely to minimize any sort of injury that might occur when thrown, for relaxing the body and absorbing shock through your arms and shoulders.

Various Types of Self-Defense Sequences in Taekwondo

Arm-Grab Escapes: Arm-Grab Escapes is applied when someone grabs your arm, generally wrist of single hand or both. The technique includes utilizing the attacker’s thumb, rotating your arm outward and following through with a strike or a throw.

Bear-Hug Counters: Bear-Hug attacks involve attackers embracing and incapacitating the victim, while counter techniques involve knee strikes to the groin and twisting the hips to create distance.

Palm-Strikes and Wrist Releases: Here, the trainee will be able to learn how to slide back into a proper stance and deliver consecutive palm-heel strikes to the face or chest, then execute a wrist-release technique to free the arm from your attackers.

Pressure-point Targeting: Pressure-point Targeting is the technique where you’ll target sensitive spots in human body and then struck or grip them to induce rapid compliance and incapacitate your attackers

Throw and Lock Combos: Throw and Combinations includes imbalancing your aggressor with a circular block, then seamlessly transitioning into a shoulder throw or arm-bar, using the attacker’s momentum against them.

How will the Students train Self defense techniques

We will start with the partner-drills that will focus on simulating realistic grabs and strikes helping you to build timing, reflexes, and confidence even under the pressure.

Scenario-based Training: Scenario-based training involves students acting as aggressors and executing various attacks, while the defending student uses their practiced techniques to enhance decision-making and adaptability in different scenarios.

Regular Break fall (Nak-Bop): In this session, students will learn to reduce their fear of being thrown and ensure safe landings.

With these practice sessions and learning techniques, Trainees will be able to protect themselves from any sort of harm or attack that they might face in real-life scenarios.
